Planets — Arizi (Accidental / External) Dignities

Planets — (Accidental / External) Dignities

While essential dignities (zati asaletler) concern a planet’s inherent strength due to sign placement, arizi dignities (also called accidental dignities) refer to a planet’s strength or weakness due to external or circumstantial factors. These dignities are about how well the planet can function within the chart’s structure (houses, aspects, motion, visibility, etc.).

Here is how arizi (accidental) dignities are understood and applied:

What Are Dignities?

  • These are conditional strengths or weaknesses of a planet depending on its placement, relationships, and state in the chart, not on which sign it's in.
  • A planet with weak essential dignity can still be strong by accident (arizi) if many external factors support it.
  • Conversely, a planet with strong essential dignity may suffer if its accidental dignity is weak.

Key Factors That Determine Dignity

  1. House Position (Accidental House Dignity):
    • Planets in angular houses (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) have stronger accidental dignity.
    • Succedent houses (2nd, 5th, 8th, 11th) are moderately dignified.
    • Cadent houses (3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th) are weaker in functioning.
  2. Aspects / Aspect Strength:
    • Favorable or supportive aspects (trine, sextile, conjunction) increase accidental dignity.
    • Challenging aspects (square, opposition, quincunx) reduce it.
  3. Visibility / Light / Day-Night State:
    • Planets that are “in light,” visible, or well-placed relative to the Sun are stronger.
    • Planets that are “combust,” too close to the Sun, or hidden lose accidental strength.
  4. Motion (Direct / Retrograde / Station):
    • Direct motion strengthens the planet’s external capacity.
    • Retrograde motion weakens it or makes it operate internally or unconventionally.
    • Stationary planets (turning retrograde or direct) may have special emphasis — can be powerful or vulnerable depending on other factors.
  5. Essential Dignity Support (Mixed Dignity):
    • If a planet is also essentially dignified (by sign) and well-placed accidentally, it gets a double reinforcement.
    • If essential dignity is weak but accidental dignity is strong, the planet may redeem itself in actual chart operation.

Why Dignities Matter

  • They make a planet effective in the real chart, not just in theory.
  • Arizi dignity helps explain why some weaker planets behave well and why some “strong” planets fail.
  • Critical in horary astrology, natal interpretation, and elections, where these external conditions often decide outcomes.
  • They provide practical nuance — a planet’s success depends both on its nature (essential) and its circumstances (accidental).
